Classroom FAQ

Who is Sonia Vargas, the instructor?

"That's me, a sole proprietor working to get music and joy into people's lives, particularly children's. As a long-time piano and voice teacher, I already knew the impact and growth that structured music-based learning could provide before I discovered Music Together®. I believe with all my heart in this program and am proud to be directing it in Issaquah, a community that values family, personal growth, and professionalism." As a parent, what is my role in class?

Sing, dance, and have fun! You might be surprised to hear that you are your child's most important music teacher right now—and it doesn't matter whether you think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. Young children develop dispositions for certain behaviors, including learning to love music, by observing and imitating their loved ones. Simply by participating enthusiastically during class and playing with the ideas at home, you'll give your children the modeling they need to learn to love to make music. Please wait to socialize or use your cell phone until after class and instead help us create a music-only environment.

What's expected of my child in class?

We know that children learn instinctively and constantly. Children's responses depend on their most dominant learning style and temperament as well as their age and developmental level. Some might follow the teacher right away. Many will simply want to watch and absorb in the first few weeks of class. Some might crawl or toddle around; others are stimulated by the music and respond more actively, running, jumping, or dancing. All are perfectly natural responses to the new, musically rich environment. Class activities help you tune in to how your child learns so you can support their music development in class and at home.

How should we use our Music Together® materials?

Play your songs frequently at home and on the go, especially during the first few weeks of class.

You might try during their playtime, before naps, and before bedtime (storytime).

What age range is a Mixed Ages class?

Infants, toddlers and young children, 0 to 5 years 11 months old (as of the first day of class). Of course, children at the upper end of the age range may benefit from your challenging them to take more "initiative" or maturity in how they participate in the group. At those ages, it can be difficult to get positive feedback about an activity, so how you frame their participation for them may matter.

What is the class size?

We need at least 6 families to launch a class. The Jam Room at Kaleidoscope School of Music generally holds 6-7. At larger venues, the curriculum is ideal for about up to 10 families.

What if I miss a class during the semester?

As of Fall 2025, makeups are available only to families who joined late, to be able to catch up with the number of classes covered by tuition.

Can I switch to a different class?

Generally, no. The established headcount of classes is important to the curriculum. A request to switch classes would be dependent on class space and is at the discretion of the teacher, and will be declined after the third week. Regardless, please inform us about any unexpected attendance challenges you're facing.

What if I join late?

As of Fall 2025, the tuition (and one-time registration fee if you're new) will not be prorated. Makeups would be available to a late-joining family, however, to catch up with the number of classes covered by tuition.

Can we eat in class?

Please feel comfortable to nurse or bottle-feed your child in class, but we ask that you not bring other food or drink into classrooms. We will arrange an area to nurse privately upon request.

Will classes be cancelled in inclement weather?

We cancel whenever Issaquah School District announces school closure due to inclement weather. In those cases we will send you a message. (Consider opting in to SMS messages.)

What's the refund policy if I pay to enroll but then cannot continue attending?

Refunds are not provided.

Please decide carefully whether a multi-week commitment is possible for you to feel appropriate value from the tuition even as life prevents unexpected turns. Your enrollment meant we did not sell your space to another family, and potential customers will move on upon learning that space was not available. We may decline additional enrollment to potential customers to keep the class headcount appropriate to the classroom size. The refund policy addresses business costs that include the licensed curriculum and materials, venue space rental, teacher allocation, and payment processing fees.

Can I bring an adult guest to observe?

Please clear guest headcount in advance and submit guest names in email to [email protected] (for liability).

Can more than one caregiver attend and participate in class?

As of Fall 2025, yes, two caregivers may attend for each family. Please contact us to discuss any extenuating circumstances.

Why aren't there classes for various age groups?

Music Together class types other than Mixed Ages do exist (https://www.musictogether.com/parents/class-types/), however our school is a new sole proprietorship and still growing the requisite customer base to support more class types.

The good news is that early childhood research results suggest intellectual and social benefits for both younger and older children to share a learning environment. Engaging a children at the high end of the class age range is different than for a toddler, but possible.

What does tuition include when I enroll?

1. A beautifully illustrated songbook.

2. The ability to stream the songs via the Music Together® app.

3. Access to the Online Family Music Zone®.

4. Music-making ideas for at-home.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Gift certificates toward classes are available! Consider one as a baby shower, birthday, or holiday gift. Please contact us if you’re interested in purchasing one.
